Liverpool all as sea as balloon sinks title hopes

Sunday, 18 October 2009

Liverpool yesterday fell to their fourth defeat of the season, in a game which could prove to be the undoing of their whole season. Sunderland beat them 1-0 through a very controversial goal.

A shot by Darren Bent in the 5th minute of the game stuck off a beach-ball which which was thrown onto the field by a Liverpool fan and deflected into the Liverpool net.

You could say Liverpool were left feeling deflated, but when you hear it was Liverpool fan who threw the ball onto the field then you get what you deserve.

I'm sure Steve Bruce was in no doubt as to who his man of the match was yesterday. Of course, the red balloon.

He said: 'Listen, I thought it was a deflection off a player. I have to say when I have just seen it there, if anybody knew that rule - that it is a drop ball - then you are a saddo.'

Rafael Benitez's response to the goal was - "These things happen," ''It's a bad situation for us that the ball was in the middle and was influential but again I will say we didn't play well. That's the main thing for me.''

A big win for Sunderland, as Bent adds to his tally of goals this season which now stands at eight. Liverpool now lie seventh, while Sunderland move up to sixth.
